Lalit Kumar Modi is an Indian businessman. He was the founder and first chairman and commissioner of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He ran this tournament for three years till 2010. Recently, he has been in the news for his relationship with former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen.
Early life
Lalit Modi was born on November 29, 1963. His father’s name was Krishnakumar and mother’s name was Bina. He has an elder sister and a younger brother. Sister’s name is Charu and brother’s name is Sameer. His grandfather Gujar Mal Modi founded the Modi Group business and the city of Modinagar. His father K. K. Modi had greatly expanded the family business.

Primary education
Lalit Modi was sent to study at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla in 1971. However, due to the threat of kidnapping, his family sent him to St. Joseph’s College, Nainital. From there, in 1980, he was expelled for bunking school and going to watch a film.
Study in America
He studied electrical engineering and business administration in America from 1983 to 1986. Lalit Modi studied at Pace University in New York for two years and then at Duke University in North Carolina for one year. He did not get a degree from either university.
Trying to buy cocaine
During college in 1985, he and three other students tried to buy half a kilo of cocaine from a motel for $10,000. The men posing as salesmen threatened to shoot him and robbed him of $10,000.
Assault on student
The day after this incident, Modi and his friends beat up a student because of suspicion. This led to his arrest on 1 March 1998 for cocaine trafficking, assault and kidnapping.
Two years sentence
When this case was heard, Modi was found guilty of this crime. But his two-year jail sentence was suspended for some reason. Instead of jail time, he was ordered to do 100 hours of community service with five years of probation.
Returned to India
In 1986 he sought permission to come to India due to ill health. The court accepted his plea and ordered him to perform 200 hours of community service in India.
Joined the family business
Lalit Modi returned to Delhi in 1986. He came here and joined the family business. He served as the Chairman of International Tobacco Company Limited from 1987 to 1991. On 21 August 1989, he was made a non-executive and non-independent director of Godfrey Phillips India, one of India’s largest tobacco companies.
Marriage of Lalit Modi and Minal Sagarani
In Delhi, Modi started seeing Minal Sagarani, who was nine years from him. who was the daughter of Pesu Aswani, a Sindhi Hindu businessman based in Nigeria. And she was the ex-wife of another Sindhi businessman based in Nigeria, Jack Sagarani. His family was against his marriage. Because Minal was nine years older than him and was also a divorced mother. Modi took his grandmother into his party. Grandmother convinced the whole family for the marriage.

Death of Minal
Minal and Lalit Modi got married on 17 October 1991 in Mumbai. After marriage they settled in Mumbai. They have two children. Son’s name is Ruchir Modi and daughter’s name is Alia Modi. Minal died of cancer on 10 December 2018.
Joint venture with Walt Disney
Lalit Modi founded Modi Entertainment Networks (MEN) in 1993 using money from a family trust. MEN had a 10-year joint venture with Walt Disney. To broadcast some Disney content and fashion TV in India.
Failure in business
MEN lost its contract with Fashion TV after Modi fell out with its founder Michel Adam Lisowski. Most of Modi’s businesses in Mumbai were not successful. He became dependent on the maintenance allowance from his father’s company.
Online lottery business
Lalit Modi then became the President and Managing Director of Modi Enterprises run by his family. In 2002, Modi started an online lottery business called Sixo in Kerala.
Lalit Modi: INDIAN CRICKET LEAGUE LIMITED
In America, Modi was impressed by the huge revenue generated by the American Sports League. He presented his idea to the BCCI in 1995 for a new 50-over tournament. He also registered the name Indian Cricket League Limited for it. However BCCI did not take this proposal seriously. Modi then decided to join the board.
Start of IPL
Lalit Modi was instrumental in launching the 20-20-based Indian Premier League (IPL) of cricket in 2008. His friends and family members also earned a lot of money from IPL.
BCCI suspended
The representatives of the Kochi franchise filed a complaint against Lalit Modi to the BCCI on 16 April 2010. Lalit Modi threatened him to give up the franchise. The BCCI suspended him on 22 charges on April 24, a day after the IPL final.
False claim on cricketer Chris Cairns
Lalit Modi claimed on Twitter in 2010 that New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns was involved in match fixing during 2008. Cairns sued Modi in March 2012 for making false statements. And Lalit Modi had to give 9,50,000 dollars.
