The mythological significance and history of Mount Abu.

The ancient scriptures refer to Mount Abu as Arbudanchal or Arbudaranya (forest of Arbudha). It is believed that there was a disagreement between the sages Vishwamitra and Vashistha, and Vashistha retired to Mount Abu where his ashram is also located. Another legend states that a bull named Nandi (Lord Shiva’s vehicle) saved its life from a calamity that occurred across the mountain, which eventually became known as Mount Abu. The people gradually turned the name Arbudaranya, which means “forest of Arbhuda,” into Abu.
